ATCRI held its first training on tobacco control in Africa, core issues relating to challenges of tobacco control in Africa was discussed as Tobacco control advocates, health practitioners, goverment delegates, and journalists with interest in health and development issues rallied to seek solution to harms of tobacco that has plagued the continent for too long.
Reports in the media have generated interest on the call for action, as arguments on the role of African governments in effecting tobacco control policies and laws to put an end to tobacco usage and smoking formed a major part of deliberation.
Advocates and experts argued that tobacco companies had targeted Africa, especially its youth, to make them addicted to their products and make money out of their illicit and perilous business.
The training was attended by participants from 12 english-speaking African countries including Ghana, Malawi, Liberia and Sierra-Leone. Others include Tanzania, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Gambia, Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia. Another training for french-speaking african countries will be held in June 2009.... read more
