Africa Marks World No Tobacco Day

Activities  came  high  in  countries  accross  Africa  as  tobacco  control  advocates  and  institutions  mark  this  year's  World  No  Tobacco  Day  in  different  countries  around  the  continent.

Global  smoking  rates  amongst  women  are  rising  as  the  tobacco  industry  increasingly  targets  females  through  its  marketing  campaigns,  according  to  the  World  Health  Organization  (WHO).

The  WHO  says  that  global  rates  of  smoking  amongst  men  have  peaked,  while  rates  amongst  women  are  rising.  Women  are  also  a  major  target  for  the  tobacco  industry,  which  needs  to  recruit  new  users  to  replace  smokers  who  will  die  prematurely  (almost  50  per  cent  of  current  users)  from  tobacco-related  diseases.

The  talks’  outcomes  will  be  reported  to  the  next  Conference  of  Parties  to  the  parent  treaty  for  the  protocol,  the  Framework  Convention  on  Tobacco  Control,  in  Montevideo,  Uruguay  in  November  2010. Framework  Convention  Alliance  (FCA)  director  Laurent

By  Ben  Ezeamalu (234Next.com)

The  lack  lustre  approach  of  the  National  Assembly  to  the  speedy  passage  into  law  of  the  National  Tobacco  Control  Bill  may  cause  the  nation  more  tobacco  related  deaths,  according  to  the  Environmental  Rights  Action/Friends  of  the  Earth  Nigeria,  a  non-governmental  organisation.

The  organisation  made  this  call  on  the  occasion  of  the  5th  anniversary  of  the  coming  into  effect  of  the  Framework  Convention  on  Tobacco  Control  (FCTC),  which  had  been  ratified  by  over  168  countries  including  Nigeria  since  2005.

Experts slam tobacco industry, calls for concerted effort as the World celebrates 5 years of WHO FCTC

World  Health  Organisation  chief  Margaret  Chan  on  Friday  accused  "ruthless,  devious"  tobacco  companies  of  bullying  as  she  steps-up  commitments  against  continued  exploitation  of  developing  countries  by  the  tobacco  industry.

In  a  speech  marking  the  fifth  anniversary  of  an  international  convention  on  tobacco  control,  Chan  said  she  would  not  allow  the  tobacco  industry  to  take  part  in  talks  on  expanding  the  world's  first  public  health  treaty.  "Like  my  predecessors,  I  am  not  on  speaking  terms  with  the  tobacco  industry,  but  I  will  say  this:  we've  come  a  long  way,  bullies,"  she  said  at  WHO  headquarters  in  Geneva.

Ghana  has  been  selected  to  host  the  second  working  group  meeting  on  World  Health  Organisation  (WHO)  Framework  Convention  on  Tobacco  Control  (FCTC)  in  April  this  year.

It  is  also  to  help  achieve  the  FCTC's  objective  of  protecting  present  and  future  generations  from  the  devastating  health,  social,  environmental  and  economic  consequences  of  tobacco  consumption  and  exposure  to  smoking,  as well  as  the  reduction  of  demand  for  tobacco  products.
