As  part  of  activities  to  marking  this  year's  World  No  Tobacco  Day,  tobacco  control  advocates  across  Africa  organised  events  in  their  different  countries.

On  December  14th,  2009  in  an  impressive  turn-out  with  wide  representation,  over  35  stakeholders  in  Ethiopian  tobacco  control  community  gathered  in  Addis  Ababa  to  deliberate  effective  strategies  for  the  ratification  of   the  WHO-Framework  Convention  on  Tobacco  Control  among  other  tobacco  control  issues  in  the  country.

 

ATCRI  held  a  stakeholders  meeting  in  Cotonou,  the  capital  city  of  Benin  Republic,  on  December  3rd,  as  part  of  the  ongoing  Tobacco  Control  Situational  Analysis  (ATSA)  in  6  African  countries.  The  meeting  included  participants  and  representation  from  ATCA,  IDRC,  FCA,  OTAF,  Minister  of  Health,  key  national  tobacco  control  advocates,  journalists  and  policy  makers  in  the  country.

 

ATCRI  on  November  20th  conducted  a  stakeholders  meeting  on  a  mini  Africa  Tobacco  Situational  Analysis,  ATSA  in  six  African  countries  at  the  Ibis  international  Hotel,  Lome  in  Togo.  The  meeting  included  participants  and  representatives  from  ATCA,  IDRC,  FCA,  State  Minister  for  Health,  key  national  tobacco  control  advocates,  journalists  and  policy  makers  in  the  country.

 

AORTIC's  seventh  International  Cancer  Conference  was  held  in  Dar  es  Salaam,  Tanzania,  following  on  the  success  of  AORTIC  2007  in  Cape  Town  and  AORTIC  2005  in  Dakar.  The  theme  of  AORTIC  2009  was  "Cancer  in  Africa  -  the  New  Reality"  and  will  focus  on  all  aspects  of  cancer  care  and  management  from  prevention  and  diagnoses  to  treatment  and  palliation.

 

ATCRI  just  hosted  a  discussion  on  communication  strategies  for  the  ATSA  projects  in  Africa.  The  strategy  meeting  which  held  between  30th  September  and   1st   October,  2009  at  the  ATCRI  office  in  Lagos,  Nigeria  involved  representatives  of  IDRC,  FCA  Africa,  ATCA  and  ATCRI.

 

ATCRI  hosted  the  Africa  Tobacco  Control  Forum  with  the  Nigerian  Heart  Foundation  as  part  of  The  8th  Pan  Africa  Heart  Network,  which  held  between  26th  and  27th  September  in  Abuja  Nigeria.

 

The  Africa  Tobacco  Control  Regional  Initiative,  coordinating  the  Africa  Journalists  Network  for  Tobacco  Control,  held  a  one-day  media  strategy  meeting  with  Zambian  chapter  of  the  network,  Zambia  Media  Network  Against  Tobacco  (ZAMNAT)  in  Lusaka,  Zambia.

 

Africa  Tobacco  Control  Regional  Initiative  (ATCRI)  in  collaboration  with  Observatoire  du  Tabac  en  Afrique  Francophone  (OTAF)  organized  its  2nd  regional  training  on  Policy  and  Advocacy  for  the  Francophone  NGOs  which  took  place  on  the  20th  to  23rd  August,  2009  in  Ouagadougou  the  capital  of   Burkina  Faso.

 

Africa  took  the  center  stage  yesterday  as  Bloomberg  Philanthropies  announced  four  recipients  of  the  2009  Bloomberg  Awards  for  Global  Tobacco  Control  at  the  14th  World  Conference  on  Tobacco  or  Health  in  Mumbai,  India.
